Sandy

At 10:30am on December 28, Gwen called me to ask if I would do an emergency rescue for her. Sandy, a 9 month old female Wheaten was being kept in a garage, was not reliably housebroken, was not spayed and her owner was about to turn her over to a shelter. Her reason was she did not have enough time to spend with a puppy. We sprung into action and she was at my house at little after 1pm that same day.

Right away we knew why they called her Sandy. She looked like the stray dog from the movie Annie – very dirty with a whole lot more hair. I wasn’t even sure at that time if she was indeed a Wheaten. I spend Saturday afternoon cutting golfball size mats out of her coat, bathing her and cleaning her up as best I could. What shone through that mess of dirt and fur was a wonderful, sweet, patient, slightly overweight, but definitely Wheaten, puppy.

As soon as she was done with her bath, she was eager to have some play time with my boys, who couldn’t wait to play with her. They romped around for a while and eventually all settled down for the afternoon. Each day after that was pretty much scheduled the same way. Sandy loved toys, loved to come over and give little kisses, loved having any attention at all.

We knew she needed a family who could spend a great deal of time training and bonding with her right away and started on the search. We had a great application from a family in PA who had experience working with shelter puppies and after one phone call on December 30, I knew we had a family for our girl.

We spoke in great length about the housebreaking issues and the patience and love Sandy would need. They couldn’t wait to meet her and take her home!

We quickly sprung into action. Holly Craig came over that night and gave Sandy a much needed grooming. We had her spayed on January 2, and then on January 5 we set off for PA to meet Sandy’s new family. It was apparent right away that Sandy was going to have a great new life. Her new name is Maddee and she is bonding with her new Mom, Dad and human brother, Noah. She is also enjoying frequent romps with the Golden Retriever next door.

Congratulations to Maddee and her family – we know that are going to be very happy together!
